Rediscovering my Curves

Tonight I joined Curves. Why? Because I have a vacation coming up in October and my YMCA treadmill regimen bores me to tears. Oh…and I purposefully bought all my vacation clothes one size smaller. I’m kicking myself now.

Curves is a women-only fitness center with a workout designed to get you out in 30 minutes. There are different ‘stations’ arranged in a circle. Resistance machines alternate with these neat square bouncy-type boards that you can jog in place, bounce, jump or step on. Crazy hyper dance mixes of faded pop tunes (Ray of Light, Dancing Queen, Don’t Speak) play over the sound system.

Every few minutes, a disembodied woman’s voice says, “Move to the next station now.” Everyone quits what they’re doing and moves clockwise to the next piece of equipment. So you work a muscle group…then do some cardio…then move to the next group, etc. Every 10 or so minutes the voice tells you to take your pulse. It gives you 10 seconds to count. Then you compare your number with the number nearest your age on a large chart to see how your heart rate is. (I rewrote that sentence three times and it still reads awkwardly. Sorry.) Newsflash: I’m closer to 35 now than to 30!! Two trips around the circle and you’re done.

It looks like a total joke. A breeze. A snap. But by the time I was finished, I felt like I had run the gauntlet. (Valkyrie…your life force is running out!) The 60 year old woman a few stations ahead was barely winded! Bitch.

The program is aimed for women in their 40s and above, judging by the photos on the wall and the promotional information. But that’s okay with me. I have the physical activity level of a nursing home resident these days anyway.

I plan on going there Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturday mornings. Plus yoga on Wednesdays. Plus walking Max daily. My body despises me tonight.

Late night…I’ve been taking work home to keep up, and I’m still behind. Tomorrow I’ll whip up some ads, follow-up on some pending tech issues, and schedule some meetings. (Yay! More meetings!) Oh, have I mentioned I’m also working on TWO CPO site redesign prototypes? One to roll into place by 9/30 to meet a corporate deadline (an interstitial design, if you will) and the REAL one to launch not long after? Oh, and did I mention my Online Manager Biennial meeting is in 3 weeks down at Corporate?

(This blog brought to you by Xanax. Xanax…better living through chemistry!)

The cats are meowing for me to come up to bed, so I shall. G’night. 🙂

i am a lotus…i am a lotus…i am a lo– ow ow!

Tonight I went back to yoga for the first time in a looooooooong time. I have dubbed this year…”Year of Vanity”** mainly because I think I really let myself go during year 32. Put on some lbs…wore the hair in a ponytail almost constantly…more comfy clothes than attractive clothes…ignored makeup.

Last week I wore some eyeshadow and mascara to work one day. Coworkers Damon and Shawn both immediately noticed. In a “whoa! you’re wearing makeup!” kind of way. Which isn’t all that great, if you think about it.

But anyway, yoga is one of the steps I need to take to regain my girlish vigor and charms, so off I went. And it was a struggle to hit the poses I used to hit (although my triangle is still ‘beautiful’ according to the instructor) both mentally and physically. My mind wandered the whole class..

I can’t believe I have to do the budget for the entire 2006 fiscal year by tomorrow!

I think for this year’s NaNoWriMo I’ll write a bodice ripper

Ow! Ow! Is that a hamstring??

Wait..I never edited “Tumble Dry” from last year’s NaNaWriMo

Will I get pregnant this year?

Jeez-n-crackers! What muscle was THAT?

Gonna wash that gray right outta my hair…

Did I give out the paycheck stubs today?

At the end of class, we relax. As I lay on my mat, the instructor anointed each of us with lavender oil and finally I felt my achy muscles melt. I fell into that sweet state that occurs right before I fall asleep where it feels like my body and head are floating and spinning in mid-air. But my mind had one more thing to say…

Thank you.

My b-day was wonderful…thanks to a 3-day weekend, great weather, and family. The “33” pic will come in a day or two. But now I need to either do my budget or hop into World of Warcraft.

**Probably not PC or sensitive to talk about something as trivial as a “year of vanity” when so many are suffering…but I’ve done and will continue to do my best to help out.

Totally Tubular Tuesday!!!

Hey! Welcome to day two of my totally exciting blog!!! (Remember…truth is black…fake and exciting is in pink!)

A few weeks ago, I ‘attended’ a Gannett (my paper’s parent company) audio chat about Walking and Wellness. I mean ‘attend’ loosely. The audio stream was playing as I was working. Halfway through, they gave a secret phrase, and if you emailed that phrase to them, you’d get a free pedometer. Yeah. I know. Only geeks would do that.

My pedometer came today through inter-company mail, and it’s pretty cool. It’s a lot sturdier than the free one I got with the McDonald’s adult happy meal last year. And tonight I took Max for an 1803 step walk. The pedometer booklet recommends 10,000 steps per day. Geez. While on the walk, I heard somebody choking through their opened dining room window. I dropped the leash, dove through the window (I cannot be stopped by a flimsy screen) and performed the Heimlich maneuver on the 68 year old woman inside. She coughed up her chunk of angel food cake almost immediately. Check the papers tomorrow for the story.

I lifted this quiz from FoodieChickie’s blog, who took it from Dave’s blog. Dave has the same last name as my maiden name. Which is cool only to me.
