Friday 5: Repeat

Happy Friday! On Saturday. Yeah.

I’m glad this week is over, as Ollie had dental cleaning/extractions on Tuesday. This is the capstone of our multi-month effort to make Ollie feel better. He’s been suffering from ear infections and neck pain and Goopy Eye (that’s the official term I’m sure) and it included anesthesia.

He ended up having 5 more teeth extracted, on top of the 16 from a few years back. He’s on anti-inflammation and pain meds for a few more days and soft food for about a month. (although he did snorfle a piece of popcorn off of my lap just now).

I’m in the middle of a four day weekend. I took a whack of Mondays off in August and September to try and burn some PTO before the new fiscal year starts on October first. Yesterday I went to Margate for a few hours and soaked in the beauty.

I take the same picture every time and I don’t care.

Time for the Friday 5! This week’s theme is Repeat. Let’s get to it!

1. What’s something you are repeatedly asked to prove?
That I know what I’m talking about.

2. What’s an album you can listen to on endless repeat?
I’m very playlist-focused now. Other than the new DMB album, I guess the Hamilton soundtrack? Hamilton is FINALLY coming to Philadelphia next year and I’ve put WM on notice to hop on tickets if he sees them. They’ll go to theater subscribers first, but I can’t fathom sitting through Starlight Express and Our Town or effing CAROUSEL (sounds fun, very depressing) to get to see Hamilton.

3. What’s a story you’ve told several times?
I don’t know if I ever told it here, so here goes. Back in the spring of 1994, New Kids on the Block were on the tail end of their career. The had broken up with their boyband svengali/manager and they released a self-produced ‘edgy’ album called Face the Music and did a smallish theater/nightclub tour promote it. On April 1st, they performed at the TLA in Philadelphia. Before the show was also an autograph signing event at one of the malls in the western suburbs of Philadelphia. It wasn’t King of Prussia. By then my favorite NK had quit the group under the guise of “horseback riding injury” so only 4 were there. I brought this for them to sign, because it was the very first NKOTB thing that I purchased:

Mom found this of mine. I made this photo black and white because it is SO OLD!! #nkotb

After waiting in a longish line, I got to the front. Donnie had Burger King chicken tenders and he was done with them. He jokingly asked if I wanted one. Me, never turning down food, said “SURE!!!” and he handed it to me. As I moved down the table, he asked if I wanted to dip it in the BBQ sauce. Me, never turning down food, said “SURE!!!” I reached forward, hand shaking to dip the tender. A security guard saw me and, thinking I was going to grab a New Kid, shoved me away and down the rest of the line. I fearfully popped the tender into my mouth, lest I be considered a food thief. The book was autographed and passed to me at the end. My then-BF was irritated that I had selfishly hogged the entire chicken tender and didn’t share.

4. What’s something you always order at a certain restaurant?
If you take me to the Cheesecake Factory, I will ALWAYS order the Crusted Chicken Romano. Always. There are a million copycat recipes out there and I’ve tried them, but they’re never as good.

5. In what way do you hope this weekend will be exactly like last?
I spent a lot of time last weekend sitting outside and reading. I’m hoping to get back out there for a little bit after dinner.

Enjoy your weekend!

Return of the Mac

Early last week, the lovely Kristen sent me a link to an event on Facebook – Return of the Mac. Joey McIntyre from NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK WAS COMING TO MY TOWN FOR A MEET AND GREET! He’s promoting his new comedy, “Return of the Mac,” debuting on April 12th on the Pop TV channel.

You guys know I was am still a very huge NKOTB fan, right? How could I resist? The RSVP list popped from 100 to 200 to 250 to 300 people in a flash. And I thought about it and I was GOING to not go … but …

From my Snapchat that morning.

Kristen works for a local newspaper and she was going to cover this event, which included a small pre-event where local bloggers could meet him and ask a question. And she could use an assistant to take the names of the people in the photos that she was taking to go along with her interviews.

I love that woman. Read More

Friday 5: Quarters

I’m so new to the blogging return that I almost forgot to post the Friday 5! This week’s theme is Quarters.

Ollie and me. This has nothing to do with this blog post.

1. The first quarter of 2017 is now behind us. How has it been?

Much better than I thought. 2016 was SO awful in SO many ways for SO many people that it’s nice to take a breather. Politically, it’s all burning down, but since ACA wasn’t taken away, I’m a bit hopeful that compassion and common sense will win the day on the rest of the issues.

2. How has this past quarter of your life been surprisingly good?

I’m 44, so the last quarter covers my last 11 years. During that time, I have had:

  • a new boyfriend who turned into a fiance into a husband
  • a new sister-in-law and new nephew
  • a new dog
  • a new apartment, a new bigger apartment, and then a new house
  • a new car
  • a new job, one that allows me to flex my brain muscles every day, and that allows me to travel from time to time
  • And a lot of good non-business travel. WDW is my mainstay, but we started the Virginia Beach trips 5 years ago and last year we finally made it to Seattle.

Sure, there have been some really sad parts, but the last 11 have been banging.

3. When did you last drop quarters into a vending machine?
I think I used some vending machines on my last trip to WDW, but I really stay away from vending machines. For my soda fix, I drink the teensy 7.5oz cans of Diet Dr. Pepper.

4. How do you feel about your state’s twenty-five-cent coin? If you’re not in the U.S., which of the coins do you think is especially striking?

Yeesh. I haven’t thought about state quarters in over 11 years. I wonder if all the people who started collecting them actually finished. Here’s NJ’s quarter, which came out in 1999.

nj state quarter

The backside of the quarter features George Washington and his men crossing the Delaware River into NJ, ready to lay the smack down on the British/Hessian troops in Trenton. It’s a good choice. I think another viable option would have been Thomas Edison.

5. Google’s corporate headquarters is called the Googleplex. What would be a good name for the corporate headquarters of your life?

We call the house Angry Man Farm. (That looks like a blog post that didn’t make the transition over. Will look into it.) How about the Kimmune or the Kimmand Center? Then again, my imaginary media empire has always been called String Bean Media, so that HQ could be called the Beanery.

YOU GUYS. This weekend is going to be amazing for this specific GenX blogger. Tomorrow I am going to a THING in the morning that I daren’t type about lest I jinx it. I will report back. I am ridiculously nervous, like a teen girl about to meet one of her boy band idols OMG OMG OMG!

Also on the docket for this weekend is our CHEAT MEAL! I’m back on my diet that I suspended last July after losing 34 lbs. I gained back 4 of them, so now I have 20 more to go before I re-evaluate. (I’m also in a Biggest Loser competition at work, and the winner gets $280.) Part of this weight loss success is owed to the twice-monthly cheat meal. To get the most flavorful bang for the calories, we always choose wings and cheese fries.

On top of it all, it’s Wrestlemania weekend! This means NXT Takeover Orlando tomorrow night and Wrestlemania on Sunday. Glad I work from home on Monday!
