One of the highlights of my week is watching movies with my friends on Fridays. I'm thankful that technology has made that all possible. This the third movie night post. Here are the first two: Part I | Part II LadyHawke - A couple is cursed by an incel bishop to never spend a minute together. He is a wolf from sunset to sunrise. She is a hawk from sunrise to sunset. About a half hour too long but I got to see Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer canoodle and it was straight fire. Enough to ...
Friday Movie Night, part II
We are still watching movies on Friday nights with friends. A few of them collaborated to build a bot on our Discord server that allows us to nominate movies, and on Friday afternoon, it creates a poll with 3 random movies for us to choose from. Three cheers for democracy! Here is the latest batch, plus a few I forgot from the last post. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension -- what the heck even WAS this movie? I enjoyed seeing very old actors when they were not old. ...
Friday Movie Night
I am not a fan of movies. In fact, I used to have a blog category called I hate movies. I only went a handful of times as a child, and as I got older, I'd only go if it was part of a group outing or a date. My gripes with movies are plentiful - they are LONG, the audio is LOUD, the theaters are COLD, the food is EXPENSIVE (but so tasty), the seats were sticky and UNCOMFORTABLE, and there's always a chance you'll be seated near a group of jerks. But many people adore movies, and to that I say ...
Friday 5: “Nine times? Nine times.”
Hoo boy what a week. It wasn't bad, just seemed long. And I'm grumpy because the ceiling upholstery in my car (called a headliner) is drooping and touching my head when I drive. I'm either going to have to staple it back up (no) or pay a few hundred to have someone else do it (no) or pull the ceiling of the Jeep out and use spray adhesive to put new fabric up. (weep)! Youtube has videos but like I said, (weep). So I'm hopping right to the Friday 5. This week's theme is "Nine times? Nine ...
Little Women: PBS Masterpiece version
I first read Little Women in 4th grade. I read it every year for a long time, and I love it to bits and pieces. It's the OG YA book. Have you read it? It's available for free via Project Gutenberg so you have NO excuse. The book as we know it is actually two books crammed together: Little Women and Good Wives. It's the story of the March sisters -- Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy -- as they grow up. When the book begins, they are 16, 15, 13, and 12. There have been quite a few movie and tv ...
Friday 5: Homecoming
Happy Friday! Today was my last Summer Friday of the season. (Boooo!) And it rained most of the morning (BOOOO!) so no beach for me. Bah. Instead, we went to see The Hitman's Bodyguard. It was okay. I went in expecting a comedy and got a HEAPING side of violence and genocide. The funny parts were funny, Samuel L. Jackson continues to be a national treasure. and the big recliners offset any disappointment. And then we went to the library to return my books, which I forgot at home. ...
Date Night: Raiders of the Lost Ark Concert
WM is a huge fan of Indiana Jones. Submitted as evidence: Our costumes for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party last October: I've dressed up often for Halloween, but I have never received such favorable reactions as I did with those costumes. My top was from Old Navy (with some added trim), the pants are from Goodwill, and the monkey came from Amazon. (Site, not rainforest.) Anyway, when WM found out that the Philadelphia Orchestra was going to play the score for Raiders of the Lost ...
Friday 5: Wrap It or Cap It
Happy Friday! Tonight I'm off to see Gone Girl with some lovely ladies. Tomorrow Max has a(nother) vet appointment at noon. He's on new food now. Fingers and paws crossed for nice drop in blood glucose. Otherwise I don't know what else to do - I really don't want to have to buy prescription food just for him. It'll be a nightmare keeping him and Ollie eating out of their proper bowls. He's already on more insulin than Mickey was, but he also weighs almost twice as much. I looked back at my ...
Batmite!
(actual conversation) WM: So they casted for the Superman/Batman live movie that's coming up in 2015! Me: Mmmhmm WM: So guess who's Batman? Me: Uh, okay. Can you give me Superman first? Henry Cavill again? WM: Yes, he's in for Superman. Me: Ok..because that would be cool. If they just switched him over. Anyway. Going with the comic movie trend they should be casting a young-- WM: Nope! Me: Uh, okay...hot British-- WM: (gleefully) Nope! Me: No? I was going to guess Cumberbatch ...
I actually LIKED Cowboys and Aliens!
WM and I saw Cowboys and Aliens last week as part of a special advance screening. Working for a dying industry has its benefits! I expected absolutely nothing from this movie. I expected to walk out 20 minutes in. Because I hate movies to begin with. Well, not exactly hate. Movies with me are simply pass/fail. I'm not wired to passively sit 2+ hours in one spot and be amused by whatever I'm shown. When I read, I control the pace. When I do crossword puzzles, my brain and fingers are working. ...
Notsodark
I joined Netflix, which should make anybody who knows me laugh heartily. I'm not much of a movie person, but I figure I should start playing catchup. I signed up on Saturday of last week and my first DVD arrived on Tuesday. Sweet! My first choice is... The Mask of Zorro. A pick for a few reasons. I used to love the old Zorro TV show. Used to watch it all the time on the Disney Channel. I'm a sucker for good swordplay...swashbucklers...the like. It also has Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta ...
Nomenclature
Until further notice, Thor will be known as Baron von Plaque. Or BvP if I'm feeling lazy. 6/3 Update: I, on the other hand, will NOT be adopting the style of Baroness von Plaque. This all arose from our watching the movie Hackers, where the bad guy was called The Plague. Thor BvP wanted a cool hacker name, and Plaque evolved from Plague. We went from Lord Plaque to Baron von Plaque. Hackers also features a very young Angelina Jolie, my new girlcrush (sorry, CZJ) who is now starring in Mr. ...
