Friday 5: Aural examination

Happy Friday, which is also National Chocolate Ice Cream Day (YES!), World Caring Day (I care), and National VCR Day (be kind, rewind!). Most importantly, it is my second summer Friday of 2024, and today I am running errands. I already went to the gym. Planet Fitness is my favorite of the three gyms I’ve belonged to since 2023. I would give my brother credit for the referral, but he probably received a free month for referring me and he doesn’t read here anyway.

Errands to do today:

Launder my hammock. I do this a few times a season as needed.

Return a shirt to Old Navy that was too large. I bought an XL because sometimes shirts are tight in my chest, but on this particular XL, the armholes went down past the bottom of my bra. The other 3 items in the order (2 pair of 7 inch inseam button fly denim sorts and olive linen pants) were fantastic.

Return a dress to Kohl’s that was too small. I bought this in a L because it looked shapeless but it was too tight in the chest. Luckily, I also ordered it in a XL and that fits fine, but it’s still shapeless. I think that’s the design and it’s honestly giving a Waltons vibe but it’s cute and I need some cute things to wear.

Shopping is hard.

Return some CDs to the library. If you were born before 1990, the CD section at your local library is a warm bath of nostalgia.

Speaking of reading, I hadn’t completed a book since December 31st. I like to read, I just can’t always get into it. I deleted Tiktok from my phone for Memorial Day Weekend as a little test, and I read 2 1/2 books in 4 days. Whoa! Since then I’ve read 3 1/2 more and now I’m on book 7. I did reinstall Tiktok, but really cut back on my usage. Tiktok is fun, but make sure you’re not going overboard with it like I apparently was.

This week’s Friday 5 theme is Aural Examination. Let’s go!

(hey, I think Scrivener gave me a little shoutout there!)

  1. What kinds of non-music sounds do you like falling asleep to?
I love when there is a cacophony of crickets outside, enough that I can hear them through the walls.
  2. Besides alarms, what sounds do you associate with a particular time of day?
I’ve had a bird feeder for a few years now and this year I have a really vocal cohort of birds. Every morning about a half hour before sunrise, a Carolina Wren (short YouTube video) goes bonkers outside of our bedroom window. WM calls it a Carolina car alarm, but I love it. Even if one of them pooped on me last night while I was in my hammock. (see errand one, above)
  3. What sounds (of any type), unliked by most people, do you like?
Cicadas. Cicadas mean summer to me, and some of my earliest summer morning memories include hearing them outside.
  4. In your downtime at home, what is usually the predominant sound?
Whatever trash pop music I’m currently obsessed with. This week it’s Eminem’s Houdini, which is as offensive as ever, but the sample of Abracadabra is perfect and Marshall Mathers has aged like a fine wine.
  5. How do you feel about the sound of your own voice?
It’s deeper than I would have liked it to be and I notice my own South Jersey/Philadelphia “hoagie mouth” accent more and more but it’s me. People seem to enjoy my rambly Instagram stories and I can still do my college radio voice if needed so meh.

I hope Mister Softee comes by later to help me celebrate National Chocolate Ice Cream Day. Have a fantastic weekend – enjoy it, it’s JUNE! THE BEST MONTH! LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Hello!

About Me

I've been blogging for over twenty (2 decades! 2-0!) years and I'm apparently one of the few over-50 female bloggers who haven't sold out to THE MAN yet; hence this blog remains quirky, homespun, and unprofitable. No big. However, if you're from Disney, Doritos, or Dave Matthews Band, I'm open to talk about selling out.

I live in Southern New Jersey with my husband WM, and our dog Murphy. I'm an adult who likes Disney but not a Disney Adult. I used to work a fun (really!) office job in Philadelphia, but since March of 2020 I'm a work from home hermit. So if you're looking for a childless, slightly round, marginally boring GenX woman's blog to follow, you've come to the right place! :)

Well, that happened.
