Friday 5: Touch that dial

Happy Friday, which is also National Whipped Cream Day (I approve) and National Bird Day (cheep).

INT. KIM’S OFFICE – DAY
KIM RUSSELL, a nondescript 51 year old woman who doesn’t look a day over 49, sits at her desk composing a blog post.

It’s also National Screenwriters Day!

It’s been a back to work week. Slow, but manageable. But this upcoming weekend is a 3-day weekend because I resolved to start taking PTO regularly during the year when I can, and also because someone on TikTok mentioned that if your typical US-based office worker took January 8 off, they would go 4 weeks without working a Monday. I’m easily influenced.

I think I’ll start dismantling the Christmas decor this weekend. I usually want it up all year long but this year feels different. I’ve been itching to box it back up and give my eyes someplace to rest. At the very least, I’ll de-Christmas my workspace.

friday, january 5

Time for the Friday 5 — this week’s theme is Touch that dial and we’re talking television, people! I don’t watch a lot of television so these answers are obviously not universal, just what’s on MY TV.

  1. What’s the most boring thing on TV?
The news. They’re either covering stories they found on social media a week ago, or trying to stir up panic about weather events that won’t happen and isolated crime events. They no longer investigate. It’s been very disheartening to witness the decline of national journalism.
  2. What’s the most enlightening thing on TV?
I haven’t really seen enlightening TV in a while – The Good Place did a great job (imo) with touching on moral and philosophical issues. For example, the idea that a person could simply become tired of living in heaven and want to go back to dust blew my mind a bit.
  3. What’s the most comforting thing on TV?
BattleBots. Let me explain. WM and I went to Disney in January of 2022 and it was cold and damp. We’d retreat back to the hotel room, take the hottest showers known to man, and tuck into bed. He found a channel that was airing old episodes of BattleBots and I was hooked on how cheesy and fun it was. Since then, the shows are a comfort watch and bring me back to being warm and in bed in my favorite place in the world with my favorite person in the world.
  4. What’s the tawdriest thing on TV?
Excluding the stuff on cable networks, I’d go with any of love-based reality programming on the major networks. The Bachelor, Love Island, etc.
  5. What’s the most thrilling thing on TV?
Hockey! I’m loving watching the NJ Devils and I really want to start watching the PWHL – that’s the Professional Women’s Hockey League. The games stream live on Youtube and I just have to set reminders to tune in.

And that’s it for today! Have the loveliest of weekends! <3

Hello!

About Me

I've been blogging for over twenty (2 decades! 2-0!) years and I'm apparently one of the few over-50 female bloggers who haven't sold out to THE MAN yet; hence this blog remains quirky, homespun, and unprofitable. No big. However, if you're from Disney, Doritos, or Dave Matthews Band, I'm open to talk about selling out.

I live in Southern New Jersey with my husband WM, and our dog Murphy. I'm an adult who likes Disney but not a Disney Adult. I used to work a fun (really!) office job in Philadelphia, but since March of 2020 I'm a work from home hermit. So if you're looking for a childless, slightly round, marginally boring GenX woman's blog to follow, you've come to the right place! :)

Well, that happened.
