Friday 5: Icons

Happy Friday! Today is National Pokemon Day (happy 30th, Pikachu) and National Retro Day. Speaking of retro, do you know what I miss? I miss owning music. I’ve been slowly ripping my MP3s back onto CDs, and I think I’m going to start buying CDs again. Part of this is me slowly prepping to maybe leave the iPhone universe when my iPhone 13 finally dies (can Android users video call iPhone users?), but part of it is simply missing physical media.

friday, february 27

And now let’s tackle the Friday 5. This week’s theme is Icons and these questions tie RIGHT into National Retro Day! I love synergy.

  1. What is the film of your pre-teens?
It’s not my favorite, but E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial was released when I was ten years old, and it was the movie people talked about for years. The story, the special effects, and the product tie-ins were instant classics. But do people still eat Reese’s Pieces?
  2. What is the song of your teens?
Ooooo, there’s a tough one. I was a teen from 1985 to 1992 and there were a lot of great songs during that stretch. I think it has to be Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer. It’s 80s, it’s Jersey, and Bon Jovi was my first concert. A very close second is Walk of Life by Dire Straits, not just because I adore it, but it was very mainstream. It was also the intro song for my high school’s public access news show.
  3. What is the TV show of your twenties?
Definitely, 100%, without question: Friends. It premiered when I was 22 and ran until I was 32. Some of it does not hold up, but if I stumble across an episode on TV, it’s almost always a stop. I do feel slightly badly because I trolled someone on Tiktok this week saying that Monica and Richard were a better couple than Monica and Chandler. But is it trolling if I’m correct? You see, Monica and Chandler… (rant redacted).
  4. What is the book of your thirties?
Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia. People will dunk on it forever, but the book sat on the New York Times best sellers list for years. It was a phenomenon. A woman walking out on a marriage that was very solid to find herself? It reached me just when my own life was unraveling. Elizabeth Gilbert may be a messy person, but she’s an excellent writer. If you think she’s insufferable, read her fiction instead.
  5. What is the song of February 27, 2026?
Bruno Mars released his first solo album in ten years today! It’s named The Romantic and I listened to it this morning. It has a strong Latin vibe and is really good. I don’t think Bruno Mars can make a bad song. I’d give this album a 9/10, only dinging it because it’s very short. Nine tracks, 37 minutes. I wanted more! My song for today is Risk It All, track 1.

And that’s all for today. I have a very crafty weekend ahead and I’m stupidly excited. I also have four people I need to text because I want to do better at keeping friendships up and running. I can’t always be shy and wait for someone to reach out first.

Have a lovely weekend and I’ll report back on Monday on both the crafting and the texting. 😉

Hello!

About Me

I've been blogging for over twenty (2 decades! 2-0!) years and I'm apparently one of the few over-50 female bloggers who haven't sold out to THE MAN yet; hence this blog remains quirky, homespun, and unprofitable. No big. However, if you're from Disney, Doritos, or Dave Matthews Band, I'm open to talk about selling out.

I live in Southern New Jersey with my husband WM, and our dog Murphy. I'm an adult who likes Disney but not a Disney Adult. I used to work a fun (really!) office job in Philadelphia, but since March of 2020 I'm a work from home hermit. So if you're looking for a childless, slightly round, marginally boring GenX woman's blog to follow, you've come to the right place! :)

Well, that happened.
