I wrote a few weeks ago that I wasn’t feeling my usual urge to bake cookies this year. Since we didn’t have the cookie exchange at work (no office to bring cookies to) and we’re pretty much estranged from the other side of the family the cookie recipients are: my house, Kristen’s house. So why bother?
I bothered anyway, and chose to make two completely new-to-me recipes to shake things up. Spritz cookies and peanut butter blossoms are regular year-to-year varieties. The new recipes were Hello Dolly Bars and White Chocolate Candy Cane cookies. WM was a huge fan of the Hello Dolly bars, which remind me of some macaroon-concoction Mom used to make when I was small. I usually detest white chocolate, but the white chocolate candy cane cookies were my favorite this year hands-down. I could have eaten every last one.
But I gave a bunch away. I gave some to our neighbors and I gave a tray to Mom’s neighbor who is extra-nice to Mom. I was supposed to give some to friends this weekend but both of those plans fell through. And the cookies will be stale by the time the rescheduled plans come up.
Over my adult lifetime, I went from baking hundreds and hundreds of cookies a year to baking about five dozen. Maybe next year I’ll mail them out. If not, I’m going to halve the recipes because we still have too many left over.
