Friday 5: Random topic generator

Happy Friday, which is National Popcorn Day. (That link is interesting – I’d have loved to see a horse drawn popcorn wagon!) But most importantly, it’s a bona fide snow day in South Jersey. WM was home from school and I’m stuck working from home forever which means nothing changes for me at all. We’re expecting up to 8 inches. Winter sucks. One hundred twenty nine days until Memorial Day.

friday, january 29

Here’s the Friday 5! This week’s theme is Random topic generator – let’s get to it!

  1. How much experience do you have with tobacco?
I smoked a half of a cigarette twice when I was 21. It didn’t do anything for me except make me cough so I stopped. I think growing up in the cloud of smoke that was life in the 70s/80s deterred me from wanting to contribute to it.
  2. What have you made with wood?
I documented making our R initial sign last summer, but the first thing I ever made with wood was in wood shop class in grade 7. It’s a bookend with a big ol’ D on the end. I guess I was always into initials. I think it’s ugly as sin, but Mom kept it for decades and WM saved it from me dumping it in the trash. He thinks it’s cute. I look at it and hear the shop teacher telling me everything I did wrong with it. (Filed against the grain, used too much glue that caused the stain not to color the wood, inconsistent sanding, irregular cuts.) Mind you, I had never TOUCHED a saw before that class.
Side view of a slanted wooden bookend with a large piece on the left, and a smaller piece underneath on the right. It is imperfect.
Side profile, showcasing all of the filing against the grain that I did.
closeup of the large wooden side of the bookend, with a giant D crudely woodburned into it. this is terrible.
That’s a big D.

3. What do you think of farmers markets in your area?
I love them so much. They don’t call New Jersey the Garden State for nothing. My favorite will always be the Collingswood Farmers Market from the years I lived there. I want to be better about visiting it this year. Strolling the market with a hot coffee and a canvas bag filled with corn, peaches, and tomatoes is a perfect moment.

4. What’s a good movie, novel, or TV show containing a shipwreck?
Naturally Gilligan’s Island. You can have Ginger and Mary Ann. I always wanted to be Lovey Howell. She was rich and her husband adored her. One out of two ain’t bad. 😉

5. What’s a good song with the word magic in its title or lyrics?
Rainbow Connection. It’s the BEST song with magic in the lyrics. Fight me.

This weekend I’m redoing the craft room (for real, didn’t do it last weekend) and starting some Valentine’s Day cards.

Your description of a lovely time at the farmers market makes me want to finally go back and experience that vibe again!

Hello!

About Me

I've been blogging for over twenty (2 decades! 2-0!) years and I'm apparently one of the few over-50 female bloggers who haven't sold out to THE MAN yet; hence this blog remains quirky, homespun, and unprofitable. No big. However, if you're from Disney, Doritos, or Dave Matthews Band, I'm open to talk about selling out.

I live in Southern New Jersey with my husband WM, and our dog Murphy. I'm an adult who likes Disney but not a Disney Adult. I used to work a fun (really!) office job in Philadelphia, but since March of 2020 I'm a work from home hermit. So if you're looking for a childless, slightly round, marginally boring GenX woman's blog to follow, you've come to the right place! :)

Well, that happened.
