Friday 5 on Saturday: Up and Autumn

Happy Saturday! The last 2 nights I’ve been passing out on the sofa between 9 and 10pm, so I welcome this weekend with open arms. And then this morning, I woke up with what seems to be a cold, so I didn’t go to Zumba. This is probably my yearly October illness, so it’s good I get it out of the way before my Fall Business trip. This year, I’m headed back to New Orleans for beignets and bon temps.

The sick SOB who designed this for Pottery Barn probably loves Autumn.

It is rainy and dreary here on Literary Lane. We gave in and turned the heat on last night. It works! I knew it would work, but we need to save hard toward getting it replaced sooner rather than later. The heating guy last week took a photo of a valve so he could show the people back at the office how old it was. Yay.

Here’s this week’s Friday 5 subject: Up and Autumn. Ugh. I hate autumn. Effing fall. Everyone thinks it’s all hayrides and pumpkin-picking stock photo opportunities but it’s actually about cold rain, cloudy skies, and encroaching dampness.

1. Where do you rank October among the twelve months of the year?

This is an AMAZING question. I had to list out the months to find October’s position. October is eighth out of the twelve. Here’s how my list pans out.

  1. June
  2. July
  3. August
  4. May
  5. December
  6. April
  7. March
  8. October
  9. February
  10. September
  11. November
  12. January

Summer and spring months take the cake, hands down. October can have some really pretty days before the shitstorm that is November.

2. What time is the sun coming up where you live, and how does it affect your life or schedule?

Today the sun rose at 6:58am. I haaaaate this because I hate getting up while it’s still dark. I’m an office worker. I thrive on light, both natural and fluorescent. It’s awful wrangling dogs in the dark, too. I used to just dump them in the yard in the morning, but wandering Ollie ixnayed that. Part of this weekend’s plans is getting some cinderblocks to block the escape route.

3. How do you manage to get enough fresh air and exercise in bad-weather months?

Ex-er-cise? Not familiar with that. As for fresh air, my public transportation commute gives me plenty of time on freezing wind-whipped train platforms and streetcorners. So I don’t miss out on the chapped lips and frostbitten fingers that come with bad-weather months.

4. Holidays and weather aside, what are the best and worst things about the autumn months?

Best: It’s easier to look pulled-together in the autumn months. The cozy clothes I like make strong comebacks. I also like decorating with oranges, browns, and goldenrods.

Worst: Being surrounded by the husks of dead plants and hibernating trees.

5. What are some good songs for the soundtrack of the season?

  • Monster Mash
  • California Dreamin’
  • Hazy Shade of Winter
  • Welcome to the Black Parade

I’m finally up to the last (2-part) episode of Friends and I’m not sure I want to watch it. I kind of like the idea of the gang hanging out in Monica’s amazing purple apartment forever. Plus, Ross is a pretty awful human being and doesn’t deserve the ending I know he gets.

Have a lovely (and non-damp) weekend!

Hello!

About Me

I've been blogging for over twenty (2 decades! 2-0!) years and I'm apparently one of the few over-50 female bloggers who haven't sold out to THE MAN yet; hence this blog remains quirky, homespun, and unprofitable. No big. However, if you're from Disney, Doritos, or Dave Matthews Band, I'm open to talk about selling out.

I live in Southern New Jersey with my husband WM, and our dog Murphy. I'm an adult who likes Disney but not a Disney Adult. I used to work a fun (really!) office job in Philadelphia, but since March of 2020 I'm a work from home hermit. So if you're looking for a childless, slightly round, marginally boring GenX woman's blog to follow, you've come to the right place! :)

Well, that happened.
