Happy Friday! Today is National Gingerbread Day (in June? That seems very Decemberish), National Doughnut Day (again? Didn’t we already have that?), and most importantly, Summer Friday number two of 2026. Today I went to the gym, picked up a prescription, had brunch with Mom, hit the library, and stopped at a farmer’s market.
What I *need* to do is make my June cards. But the weather’s been so perfectly June that I’ve been outside in my hammock until past sunset.
Which is where I’m at right now. I only have 25% left on my Surface battery, so let’s hit the Friday 5. This week’s theme is Vexillology, which is the study of flags!
(It was recommended to use Flagpedia as a source.)
1. Of national flags not your own, which is especially striking, beautiful, or interesting?
I think the flag of Kiribati is delightful. I like that you can tell that it’s an island nation (actually, a series of islands but you get my point) from the waves, sun, and bird.
2. Of national flags not your own, which is especially boring or unattractive?
Poland and Monaco are quite boring. Just red and white.
3. Which country’s flag (not your own) would make a good album cover for your first solo record, or a good tattoo on your shoulder?
I like the Flag of Cocos. It has a lot going on, but I like all of it. I’ll choose an album color, as I don’t think all of that green would look good in a tattoo.
4. Now that you’re the head of your own brand-new country, what will the flag look like?
Inspired by Nepal’s unconventional triangle design, Kimtopia’s flag has two purple (favorite colors) triangles back to back, being bisected by the flagpole. One side will have a yellow book, the other a yellow dog. I whipped up a mockup for you.

I’d also have to embed some wire in the flag so both sides would stick out at once.
5. What are some red flags others might observe in you, upon first getting to know you?
I’m socially awkward and my desire to be friends with almost everyone probably comes off as weird and offputting.
Somewhat related: I had a matching game when I was a kid that featured world flags on plastic tiles that were seated in a board. You’d flip one over and try to remember where the other flag was. Two observations: 1) I bet half of those country names and/or flags no longer exist; 2) this was a very serious game for a seven year old. No matching animal faces for you, you’re going to have the East German flag burned into your memory!
Have a great weekend!

Above and beyond on the beautiful Kimtopia flag design! What an overachiever!
