Happy Friday! Today is Black Poetry Day –here’s In This Place (An American Lyric) by Amanda Gorman if you need a little lift. It’s also National Pasta Day (I’d have it every day if I could) and National Edge Day which doesn’t celebrate Edge the pro wrestler, but those who have embraced the Straight Edge lifestyle of no alcohol or drugs.

Not too much to report from the last few days. I went back to my usual coffee shop to work this morning, even though it’s owned by a Trumper. (There’s a photo of Trump on the wall in the back, visible from the pickup area.) I’m burnt out on boycotts. My tax dollars already go toward housing and employing this lunatic and his party, and I’m more upset about that than about the penny of my Spotify subscription that went toward one of his Inauguration events. I can’t even make myself go to No Kings tomorrow. I’m mentally tired. Activist Kim is on hiatus this year. She’ll be back soon though.
Anyway — here’s the Friday 5. This week’s theme is Levels of Care, which feels oddly relevant!
- What are you especially geeky about?
It’s hard to say these days because there are such vocal, performative superfans of everything that my own level of enthusiasm seems mild in comparison. I’m especially geeky about the Disney Parks but I can go days without reading blogs about them, and I’ve never visited the international parks. - What are you ambivalent about?
Award ceremonies. I used to love them, but now there are so many and the pre-show hype is exhausting. These days, I just scroll through the red carpet looks and catch the best acceptance speeches the next day. - What are you unreasonably, vehemently opposed to?
The US-funded genocide of Palestinian families. The taking of Israeli hostages was also horrific, but hoo boy, double-tapping hospitals is lowest of the low. - What do you pretend to understand when other people talk about it?
Their fandoms. - What’s something you’ve wanted for years to know more about, but you’re intimidated or paralyzed by the subject?
Glassblowing! I’ve always loved watching glassblowing demonstrations and would have LOVED to make my own beads back when I was into jewelry-making but would I even start? I’d burn my garage down!
This weekend I’ll be taking down the hammock and clearing the garden beds, trying to make peace with the changing seasons both literal and otherwise. Love to all marching in No Kings tomorrow! I’ll be back Monday with a Mug Life post and a better attitude.
