(Tales from a menopausal gamer.)
After a few years of cozy/casual games (Stardew Valley, Slay the Spire, Disney Dreamlight Valley) I yearned for a game with a little more meat to it. By meat I mean combat. After doing a little research on a game that can be adventurous but casual, where I can go dungeon diving but there’s not much at stake when I die (unlike Valheim which can go pound sand), I chose Skyrim.
And oooo. Ooooo! It really scratches the itch.

Here’s a secret: I haven’t played console games in years because the controllers became very complicated and I found them intimidating. But our Xbox controller with its myriad of buttons and joysticks isn’t as difficult to navigate as I thought. And gaming from my sofa is very nice.
I’m playing a Breton stealth archer with a healthy side of thievery to keep things exciting. Her name is Akromah, after my beloved Warcraft paladin. I’m on the easiest mode. I don’t have to worry about eating or sleep and that’s fine. I didn’t do a deep dive on all of the races and classes and benefits and drawback. I didn’t look up the perfect build. I just wanted a game that I can log into for an hour, hour-and-a-half here and there and just have fun.
When I one-shot an enemy, the game switches to a third person cutscene of me releasing the arrow and then follows the arrow to the enemy. The enemy collapses to the ground. And when that happens, I sing, “Shot through the heart, and I’m to blame!”
I’m sure WM still finds it funny.
