Yesterday Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three charges in the murder of George Floyd. I and millions of others were relieved and almost celebratory. But a guilty conviction on a crime that had multiple eyewitnesses on the scene AND recorded and played over and over thousands of times should be natural, and a slam dunk, and completely expected. The fact that it is not is reprehensible.
“You were told, for example, that Mr. Floyd died because his heart was too big. You heard that testimony. Now having seen all the evidence, having heard all the evidence, you know the truth. And the truth of the matter is – that the reason George Floyd is dead is because Mr. Chauvin’s heart was too small.”
Prosecutor Jerry Blackwell, 4.19.21
Nobody deserves to be murdered. But to be murdered in the street for possibly passing a counterfeit $20 by someone who is supposed to protect and serve? Oh hell no.
This isn’t justice, it’s the first step toward greater accountability. Hopefully.
