Election Day 2024: Nauseous optimism

Nauseous optimism is the phrase making its way around my blue side of the internet about today’s election.

I was hopeful with only a tiny amount of dread in 2016, thinking there’s be NO WAY this country would vote for a reality TV star who was also a failed businessman running on a campaign of hate. Alas…

I did not expect Biden to pull through in 2020 (he was not my first choice), but I thought this country was over MAGAmania. Alas…

And now we once again have a very competent woman facing off against an incompetent former president. He is older, less coherent, and more hateful than ever. His VP candidate thinks I’m worthless and have no stake in this society and STILL there is a very good chance he’s going to win. I hope I’m wrong about that.

I’m voting for Kamala Harris because I care about people. I believe everybody deserves to be safe, loved, and warm. I care about that much more than I care about the price of a bag of Doritos or a gallon of gas.

If you love somebody, you don’t vote for a person who is actively against their interests. I love a lot of people. I love people of all colors, faiths, and sexualities. I want them to be safe so I will be voting for a candidate who will protect them in all branches of government, but especially judicially. I love seeing little kids scamper through stores in cat ear headbands and tutus, so I will be voting for a candidate who will NOT support legislation and judges who force them to carry pregnancies to term and/or bleed out in parking lots.

I think the atrocities in Palestine are unconscionable. And yes, our policies there are the mistakes of the Biden presidency. And the Trump presidency. And the Obama presidency. And the Bush presidency. And so on and so on.

We cannot assist the oppressed in other countries by making choices that will oppress more people in our own country.

A little louder: We cannot assist the oppressed in other countries by making choices that will oppress more people in our own country.

Although I’ve written hundreds of postcards to people urging them to vote by mail, my secret is that I still prefer voting in person. Today I’ll vote for Kamala Harris and have a swig of Pepto-Bismol to prep me for whatever comes.

Hello!

About Me

I've been blogging for over twenty (2 decades! 2-0!) years and I'm apparently one of the few over-50 female bloggers who haven't sold out to THE MAN yet; hence this blog remains quirky, homespun, and unprofitable. No big. However, if you're from Disney, Doritos, or Dave Matthews Band, I'm open to talk about selling out.

I live in Southern New Jersey with my husband WM, and our dog Murphy. I'm an adult who likes Disney but not a Disney Adult. I used to work a fun (really!) office job in Philadelphia, but since March of 2020 I'm a work from home hermit. So if you're looking for a childless, slightly round, marginally boring GenX woman's blog to follow, you've come to the right place! :)

Well, that happened.
