Remember when I didn’t watch movies? That isn’t the case anymore! Here are some more I watched over the summer.
The Fall Guy: A lot of people loved this movie and I was looking forward to it because I was a huge fan of the TV show when I was a kid. This movie was perfectly fine, but I wanted more cheesy stunts and less Gilmore Girls-coded dialogue. So much talking. So much. We rented this at home for $19.99 and I’m glad we didn’t spend money to see this in the theater.
Twisters: We also rented this one at home. It’s a great summer movie. I’d definitely follow the Tornado Wranglers Youtube channel in a heartbeat. I had a good laugh at how the people who live in Tornado Alley needed the Youtubers’ advice on how to shelter from a tornado. Glen Powell was handsome and funny. There was a little plot swerve regarding who REALLY were the villains that actually caught me off guard.
Anyone But You: Watched on the flight from Philadelphia to Seattle. I’m a huge fan of the traditional 90s romcom. This was good, but not great. Whenever they needed to fill time, Ben and/or Bea took off some clothes. Which is fine. Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney are both very attractive. Glen made a VERY good Male Main Character. But Bea’s family, ugh. I was amazed at how much money they spent on throwing a rehearsal dinner for such a small wedding party.
Practical Magic: Watched on the flight from Seattle back to Philadelphia. It was cute and fun and deviated a LOT from the book. I can see why some people make this film their entire autumnal personality.
Road House: Rented at home. This went way too deep into the bouncer’s back story and his terrible secret even though nobody in the little town even seemed to care about it once it came out. I was left wanting to learn more about the town, and I am also sick to death of the Shane trope.
The Beekeeper: Watched at home. Fact: WM is a complete slut for Jason Statham movies. He’ll tell you himself. This one was over the top revenge movie with a sweet (and short) cameo by Phylicia Rashad.
The Hit Man: Watched at home. My pick because I wanted more Glen Powell. Sorry, not sorry. This was darkly funny and somewhat based on a true story. It was very heist-y with lots of spicy moments and some moments of pure WTF.
Bullet Train: Watched at home. WM’s pick. Funny, memorable characters, a lot of twistiness in the plot that you really have to pay attention to. Brad Pitt’s character was my least-favorite of the bunch. This had a very “what Americans think Japanese entertainment is” vibe.
Tropic Thunder: My pick! I was reluctant to watch this years ago because on the surface it’s Robert Downey Jr in blackface. But it’s part of the plot. It’s a movie within a movie and the satire and humor are top notch. I can imagine Hollywood not really knowing what to do with this movie because it rips into them so hard.
